Fundraising T-shirts help nonprofit event fly high
What began almost a century ago as the first refuge for birds of prey, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary opens in new window is now so much more. Located in the Kittatinny Ridge of eastern Pennsylvania, Hawk Mountain welcomes more than 60,000 annual visitors and is supported by 9,000-plus members. The nonprofit sanctuary includes a scientific research center, has an all-ages learning facility and is one of the top spots in the region to witness the annual autumn hawk migration.
Hawk Mountain’s conservation training program welcomes people from around the world to spend about four months learning about the site and its raptors, explore research opportunities and more. The sanctuary is also home to one of the world’s longest-running hawk counts. Each year, from Aug. 15 through Dec. 15, teams count thousands of migrating hawks, eagles, falcons, ospreys and other raptors.
“We’re really proud that not only are we a nonprofit that does all this conservation work, but we have a place for people to visit,” said Tammy Jandrasitz, membership and volunteer manager. “We have 2,600 acres of land and an eight-mile trail system which includes an accessible trail to our first lookout. We also have a wonderful native plant garden, an amphitheater outside where we host a lot of educational programs and a visitor center where people can come in and see exhibits.”
Support soars with help from fundraising T-shirts
Each year, Hawk Mountain hosts Birds & Brew, a late-summer fundraiser. Attendees enjoyed unlimited samples from 20 local breweries, wineries and distilleries, plus a buffet dinner, live music and appearances by live raptors at the seventh annual August event.
A one by one grant provided fundraising T-shirts opens in new window that were sold before and during Birds & Brew. For $10, attendees could purchase a T-shirt that became a souvenir to promote the event and cause with each wear. Plus, the money raised supports the mission. “Everyone seemed to have a great time,” Jandrasitz said. “They got to learn a little from our educators and the education birds,” she added, referring to the sanctuary’s ambassador raptors used in educational programs. “It’s one of our events that grows each year, and a lot of the attendees immediately went in and became members, so that’s great.”
A note from Cheryl
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is a historic and world-renowned conservation center. The organization not only does important work for the land and wildlife, but it also offers one-of-a-kind experiences for visitors too.
