Interactive learning—just for kids
At the Children’s Safety Village opens in new window in Belleville, Ontario, learning how to stay safe is an adventure built just for kids. Founded in 2003, the registered charity delivers hands-on safety education and awareness in a world all its own: a child-scaled village full of real-world scenarios to explore. Designed to meet those ages 4 to 13 where they are, Children’s Safety Village empowers youth of all ages and abilities with the tools and confidence they need to make smart, informed choices and actively contribute to a safer community.
Through programs and partnerships with local first responders and safety experts, the organization brings critical topics—street safety, fire safety, home safety, and emergency preparedness—to life for 2,000 children each year. Learning happens through movement, play and interaction, helping safety lessons resonate well past childhood.
Empowering through experiences
Most of Children’s Safety Village’s programming happens on its grounds—the outdoor village itself, which includes streets and sidewalks, traffic lights, a fire station, police station, city hall and other buildings. During school visits, public drop-ins and other events, children learn from professionals about pedestrian, bicycle, electrical, animal, internet, rail, home and personal safety. For example, youth have opportunities to interact with firefighters and learn about their equipment and uniforms. “The firefighters come in and they explain their gear and what they wear, step by step, so that in an emergency situation, the children are less afraid,” said Rachelle Baldock, executive director.
Promotional display proves invaluable
A one by one grant provided a retractable banner opens in new window that the organization displays during events and appearances. Baldock said she chose the product because of its portability and versatility. Banners for charities can deliver key information and messaging—and that’s exactly the case for Children’s Safety Village. “We needed a banner to show the world what we’re capable of,” Baldock said.
One side of the banner features the brand logo and program information. Cartoon characters represent different safety topics and do a great job drawing interest from little ones. “It’s intriguing for the kids,” Baldock said. “Even if they can’t read it, they see an animal or a stop sign and ask about it. It’s a conversation starter.”
The other side of the banner promotes the Children’s Safety Village capital campaign. In 2028, the organization will move to a new, larger home, and the hope is to raise about $3 million over two years. Throughout fundraising efforts, the promotional display will be an important asset. “We take it to every event,” Baldock said. “It’s a staple. It’s basically attached to me everywhere I go.”
