Shelter helpers make a difference

For nearly 70 years, Animal Allies Humane Society opens in new window has served as a refuge for cats and dogs in Duluth, Minnesota. Founded in the late 1950s after its eventual founder took in a litter of kittens left on her doorstep, the organization has grown from a foster-based rescue into a full-service humane society that helps find safe, loving homes for more than 1,000 pets each year.

Animal Allies Humane Society, which opened in 2009 following a successful capital campaign, operates a no-kill shelter. It typically cares for about 110-120 animals at one time. Those animals arrive at the shelter as strays or surrendered or lost pets. The organization’s work is carried out by a dedicated team of more than 35 staff members, 18 foster families and nearly 170 active volunteers, all working toward the organization’s mission of supporting compassionate journeys for pets and people.

A trusted ally in the community

While pet adoption remains at the heart of its work, Animal Allies Humane Society offers a range of supportive services designed to keep pets and families together. These include microchipping and other pet services, as well as an extensive humane education program that provides free sessions for children, adults, classrooms, schools and community groups. The organization also serves as a resource for pet owners, offering guidance on lost and found animals, rehoming options, behavior and training referrals, access to local veterinary care and finding pet-friendly housing.

Like so many nonprofits, Animal Allies Humane Society operates on a tight budget and relies heavily on the generosity of the community. Volunteers help the shelter’s animals get exercise and mental stimulation through walks, playtime and other activities. Some volunteers clean kennels and give catnip to the cats. Many attend events and spread the word throughout the community. “Our volunteers are absolutely essential,” said Bailey Evans, grant writer. “They provide thousands of hours of support every year. We truly couldn’t do this work without them.”

Volunteer thank-you gifts recognize shelter’s hardworking helpers

A one by one grant provided tote bags opens in new window given as volunteer appreciation gifts. Chosen for everyday practicality, the bags quickly became a favorite among volunteers. “The volunteers were really excited, and they use the bags all the time for pet supplies, groceries and whatever else they might need,” Evans said.

For Animal Allies Humane Society, the volunteer thank-you gifts were a simple but meaningful way to recognize the people who give their time, energy and compassion to the shelter every day—reinforcing how valued volunteers are to the organization’s mission and long-term impact.
