Event T-shirts promote heart health

Hearts of Valor Inc. is a nonprofit dedicated to improving heart health through education, advocacy and support. The organization is on a mission to prevent cardiovascular disease, expand access to lifesaving resources, and support individuals and families affected by heart conditions.

Hearts of Valor Inc. offers hands-on CPR and lifesaving skills training, community-based heart health education events, outreach initiatives and financial support for people impacted by cardiovascular disease. These efforts are carried out with an emphasis on equity, prevention and empowerment. “Those we primarily work with are the underserved and uninsured,” said Kina Lucombe, executive director. “It’s the people who wouldn’t normally have access to testing or receive a diagnosis.”

Inspired to make a difference

Kina—a registered nurse and certified case manager—launched Hearts of Valor Inc. after experiencing her own heart-related health crisis in 2019. After weeks of feeling unwell despite a clean report from a cardiologist, she collapsed and was revived by her husband. Upon being rushed to the hospital, doctors diagnosed a complete atrioventricular (AV) heart block. She was treated with an emergency pacemaker.

“For a while I didn’t want to share what happened because I was embarrassed,” Kina said. “I was someone that always promoted a healthy lifestyle.” After a lot of thought and prayer, she decided to share her story on social media. She published a video in February 2021 (February is American Heart Month) that garnered an overwhelming reaction, inspiring her to start an online support group, which evolved into Hearts of Valor Inc. and its variety of programs and services.

Nonprofit shirts add something special

In February 2025, the nonprofit held its inaugural 5K and health expo. The family-friendly fundraiser and awareness-building event welcomed more than 100 participants, along with local organizations, health professionals and wellness resources.

Returning bigger and better in 2026, the second annual event brought together about 250 participants, and more than 100 community members received free heart, kidney, lung, cancer and diabetes screenings. A one by one grant provided event T-shirts—adding to the festive atmosphere, giving participants a keepsake and helping increase visibility for the nonprofit.
