Promotional sign helps create a welcoming place for remembrance
When someone loses a loved one to suicide, the grief can be especially complex. Alongside loss, many people also experience trauma, isolation and stigma. Heartache2Hope opens in new window exists to ensure no one navigates that journey alone.
Founded in 2014, the nonprofit provides free professional counselling, trauma therapy, peer support and group programs specifically designed for people impacted by suicide. It’s the only organization of its kind in Ontario and offers support to those throughout the province and across Canada.
Providing specialized support and community
Heartache2Hope was founded by psychotherapist Flavia Ceschin, who recognized the unique needs of individuals grieving the loss of a loved one to suicide, as well as the lack of community-based support available to them. Through her clinical experience, Ceschin witnessed firsthand that suicide loss grief is unlike other forms of bereavement, as it often combines both trauma and grief, and requires a specialized approach to healing.
Today, the organization’s hallmark program is a closed support group that connects people who share similar experiences. While it runs for 12 weeks, the experience often resonates much longer. “We have people who still hang out with members from their group years later,” said Cassidy Tyler, social media and email marketing specialist. “It’s truly a community space.”
Promotional signage enhances key fundraiser
Walk2Remember is an annual 5K event that brings together people who’ve lost a loved one to suicide. Held in June in a waterfront park, the gathering provides an opportunity to honour loved ones, connect with others who share a similar experience, and support Heartache2Hope’s mission. The fifth annual event welcomed more than 500 participants and raised over $160,000.
A one by one grant provided a new promotional sign opens in new window and custom pens opens in new window. The sign was displayed beside one of the walk’s most meaningful features: a memorial heart where participants place flowers bearing the names of loved ones they are honouring. It became a focal point of the event, appearing as a backdrop in photos and speeches throughout the day.
Participants used the pens to write the names of loved ones on memorial flowers and event bibs, while volunteers used them at registration and resource tables. For a small nonprofit that relies heavily on fundraising and donations, these promo items provide lasting value.
“For a small but mighty organization, each dollar is just so important,” Tyler said. “The sign is now part of Walk2Remember and hopefully will be for years and years to come.”
