Nonprofit volunteer appreciation gifts recognize impact

Access to recreation activities for individuals with disabilities isn’t always equal. In northeast Ohio, barriers like cost and lack of specialized support can limit opportunities—but the team at Rec2Connect is dedicated to changing that reality. Founded in 2009 by a recreation therapist who saw a gap in accessible programs, the nonprofit provides inclusive recreation opportunities for individuals of all abilities and ages. Today, the organization serves more than 2,000 people annually through programs designed to build physical skills, confidence and connection.

Expanding recreation access

Rec2Connect offers recreation therapy programs in community spaces in and around Cleveland, bringing activities directly to senior centers, veterans’ homes, schools and anywhere else participants live, learn and gather. Those activities include adapted aquatics, rock climbing, archery, kayaking, cheerleading, fitness classes and more—all designed to meet participants where they are.

“We have a lot of great community partnerships,” said Linden Miller, marketing and fundraising manager. “We work out of local rec centers and team up with a variety of nonprofits. Our cheer squad, for example, is partnered with another adapted football team from a separate nonprofit. We are grateful for all the meaningful work we are able to accomplish with all our great partners.”

Custom branded items show gratitude

By creating inclusive environments, Rec2Connect helps participants build independence, develop social skills and experience meaningful recreation. Volunteers play a significant role in that mission. Many are paired one-on-one with participants or help guide activities, providing support that allows programs to feel more personalized and accessible.

A one by one grant provided water bottles and magnetic clips. The custom branded items were included in volunteer appreciation gift bags given during National Volunteer Week in April. The bags—which also included apparel and thank-you cards signed by program participants—were given to the dozens of volunteers that make Rec2Connect’s impact possible. “Knowing that our volunteers, whether they’re teens or adults, lead very busy lives, I think it’s important to pause and show how grateful we are for the time they give,” Miller said. “Our volunteers make a tremendous difference.”
