Nonprofit merch supports arts, culture and community

NUNU Arts and Culture Collective opens in new window serves as a gathering place where art, music, language and culture come together in the small Louisiana town of Arnaudville. Founded about 15 years ago, the nonprofit supports artists and cultural traditions while offering opportunities for community members to learn, create and connect.

In the former hardware store the organization calls home, NUNU hosts rotating art exhibits, live music performances, cultural programs, workshops and educational events. The organization also operates a bookstore, café and maker space, serving thousands of visitors across a region of rural communities and nearby Lafayette.

A welcoming space for creativity and culture

NUNU’s programming reflects the unique cultural heritage of its community. The collective hosts French, Creole and Indigenous language gatherings—called “tables”—that bring together participants from across the region and, through virtual participation, from around the world.

Behind all this work is a dedicated team of supporters. “We’re an all-volunteer organization,” said Felicia Kaplan, special events coordinator. “We all bring our special talents to the table.”

Nonprofit merchandise raises funds and awareness

A one by one grant helped NUNU expand its collection of merch with embroidered caps opens in new window. The khaki-colored hats were added to the organization’s marketplace, where they are displayed alongside books, artwork and handcrafted items from local creators. NUNU sells the hats as a fundraiser, generating support for ongoing arts programming, educational outreach and cultural events.

These custom branded hats quickly became one of the organization’s most popular items. NUNU promotes them through social media, newsletters and events, while volunteers wear the caps during community activities and while working in the café and kitchen.

Beyond NUNU’s walls, the hats help build awareness for the nonprofit. They have been featured as door prizes at regional tourism meetings and community events, introducing new audiences to the organization and its mission. “People love the hats,” Kaplan said. “They really do. And they love the khaki color because they go with anything.”
